Nayib Bukele poised to win El Salvador presidential election: Washington Post

On Sunday, February 4, presidential elections will be held in El Salvador (a state in Central America, bordered by Honduras in the east and north and Guatemala in the west).

According to public opinion polls, the 42-year-old will win with a large advantage Nayiba Bukelewho resigned as president shortly before the elections, writes The Washington Post.

The newspaper recalls that Bukele himself jokingly called himself “the coolest dictator in the world.” He is known for his leather jackets, active use of social media and successful fight against criminal gangs.

Bukele is running despite the constitutional ban on the re-election of the president, WP notes. On December 1, he resigned to participate in the presidential elections on February 4.

His critics, the newspaper notes, fear that the poor Central American country is rapidly moving toward becoming a one-party state, following Nicaragua, Venezuela and Cuba. The president’s supporters, according to WP, have a completely different vision: Bukal is seen as a leader whose tough policies defeated rampant crime. Recent opinion polls generally show his approval rating above 80%.
