“Navy Destroyer Gravely Shoots Down Anti-Ship Ballistic Missiles in Gulf of Aden”

The Navy destroyer Gravely has successfully intercepted two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, according to U.S. Central Command. This recent incident marks the ongoing efforts of the Gravely, along with fellow destroyers Carney, Laboon, Mason, and Thomas Hudner, to ensure the safety of the Red Sea and surrounding waters for commerce.

The Houthis launched three anti-ship ballistic missiles towards the U.S.-flagged container ship M/V Maersk Detroit as it was transiting the Gulf of Aden. Fortunately, the Gravely managed to intercept two of the missiles, while the third one landed in the sea. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries or damage to the ship.

This attack comes amidst a rise in attacks on commercial vessels in the region following the October 7 attack on Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, and subsequent Israeli operations. Since the end of 2023, the Houthis have targeted over 30 commercial ships. The Gravely has also been involved in retaliatory strikes alongside the U.S. and U.K. militaries, targeting Houthi logistical hubs, air defense systems, weapons storage, and launching locations in Yemen.

U.S. Central Command stated last month that they have reason to believe that these attacks, although launched by the Houthis in Yemen, are fully enabled by Iran. In response to these escalating threats, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced the creation of a multinational task force on December 18th. This task force aims to protect civilian ships in the economically vital sea route.

The Gravely is part of the Dwight D. Eisenhower’s carrier strike group, which departed Norfolk, Virginia, in October for a scheduled deployment. After transiting the Strait of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf in November, the Gravely has been actively involved in safeguarding maritime security in the region.

The successful interception of the anti-ship ballistic missiles by the Gravely highlights the importance of maintaining a strong naval presence in the Gulf of Aden. The ongoing efforts of the Gravely and its fellow destroyers demonstrate the commitment of the U.S. and its allies to ensure the safety of commercial vessels and protect vital sea routes.

As tensions continue to escalate in the region, it is crucial for international cooperation and coordination to effectively counter these threats. The creation of the multinational task force signifies a united front against those who seek to disrupt maritime security and endanger global commerce.

The bravery and skill demonstrated by the crew of the Gravely serve as a reminder of the dedication and professionalism of the U.S. Navy. Their actions not only protect commercial interests but also contribute to regional stability and security.

As the situation evolves, it remains imperative for naval forces to remain vigilant and prepared to respond to any potential threats. The Navy destroyer Gravely and its counterparts will continue their mission to safeguard the Gulf of Aden, ensuring the uninterrupted flow of trade and maintaining peace in the region.
