Navigating Through Pregnancy Challenges: Elianne’s Story

Elianne is so nauseous during the first weeks of her pregnancy that she cannot keep anything down, not even water. That’s why she gets special medication. But it doesn’t end there: at the beginning of this year she will also have to undergo two emergency operations for an abscess in her breast. “The pain I felt then was hellish,” she says.

Barely recovered, she suffers from severe abdominal pain that hurts so much that she cannot place where it comes from. She becomes terrified of the pain because she fears losing her baby. “Tears came to my eyes when we heard that little one’s heartbeat.”

Fortunately the baby is doing well, but Elianne is not yet. Her platelet levels are still too low, but the doctors don’t yet know what exactly is wrong with her. “I was tested for everything, even for cancer. At that moment the world fell away from me,” she says. “Fortunately, the scary, life-threatening things are now excluded, but the uncertainty makes it difficult.”

She continues: “You know that it can be very different the second time, but still… you’re not making up this sum of setbacks, are you?” Elianne tries, despite everything, to focus on the positive. Like the baby, her first Saint and great love Chiel (as Thomas is really called). “I especially hope that I will get a nice birth in return.”

She also got to know her partner in a ‘deeper way’ because of the intense year. “I didn’t know that feeling,” she explains. “Every man says that his wife is number one, but actually making that happen is another matter. I see that go wrong often enough up close. With Chiel we always come first. He reschedules meetings, arranges everything to be able to reach me That is extremely difficult in his world, but he does it. He really puts himself aside. For us, for me.”
