Navigating the Evolution of Temporal Autonomy in the Workplace: Insights from France, Germany, and China

Résumé :

The interactions between time and autonomy have marked the evolution of work. Faced with the demands of production models, whether economic, technical or social, workers have long aspired to control their time. For salaried employment, temporal autonomy has progressed from a fierce struggle for the reduction of working hours towards more subtle debates on its management. In the 19th century, the challenge was to “take back” time from the employer, while today, the issues are becoming more complex around the organization of working time. This shift marks an evolution from the first autonomy, focused on duration, towards a second, oriented on the place of work within all social times. The beginning of this transition took place at the end of the 1960s with the successive appearance of negotiation tools making it possible to integrate the aspirations of employees and the requirements of the productive system: variable hours, time savings accounts, teleworking, etc. Far from being uniform, the second autonomy presents significant nuances, in particular depending on socio-economic contexts. This book offers insights from field research in France, Germany and China, in order to assess the conditions, opportunities and risks linked to this transition to a new temporal autonomy.
