“That’s why we see it as something that has to be done. If we’re really honest, we all have mixed feelings about this. There is an aspect of having to be involved: we want to meet some of what is expected of a family, and we want to project an image to the outside world that everything is going well.” One happy family, then.
But in many cases, not everyone at the festive table is so “happy”. “Some enjoy it, others find it an assignment or something very tiring.” According to Rika, this may partly have to do with old family dynamics bubbling up. “When you come together as a family, people fall back into old family patterns. With all the arguments, discomfort and difficult relationships that come with it.”
