Alexei Navalny’s bank accounts have been blocked and his apartment in Moscow was seized by order of a Russian court, a spokeswoman for Navalny, the main opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said on Thursday. The measures had been taken on 27 August, when Navalny had already been transferred to the Charité hospital in Berlin to receive treatment following poisoning with novichok, a nerve agent. The news was only made public today.

The measures were taken by a Russian court in the context of a long-standing dispute between the Navalny anti-corruption foundation and a Russian company that deals with offering canteen services to schools. The company sued the foundation after Navalny’s group posted a video questioning the quality of the food on offer. According to Navalny’s supporters, the subsequent complaint filed by the Russian company, the blocking of bank accounts and the seizure of the Moscow apartment would be part of a coordinated action by the Russian regime to target the Navalny foundation, which often carries out investigations on the corruption of people considered close to President Putin.
