In Russia, associates of imprisoned opposition politician Alexei Navalny reported on December 25 that they found him in maximum security colony No. 3 “Polar Wolf” in the village of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug of the Russian Federation.
The lawyer was already able to see Alexei Navalny. According to him, “everything is fine” with the opposition politician.
Russian media reported that Polar Wolf, one of the most restrictive colonies in Russia, is located above the Arctic Circle in a permafrost zone.
Navalny’s ally Ivan Zhdanov said that “the conditions there are harsh, with a special regime in the permafrost zone.”
“It’s very difficult to get there, and there are no letter delivery systems for FSIN-letter or Zonatelecom,” Navalny’s colleague said.
Companions of the imprisoned politician are confident that Navalny was transferred to such remote and difficult places in order to further isolate him and prevent him from communicating with lawyers and loved ones. They stopped allowing lawyers to see him on December 6th.
On March 22, 2022, the Lefortovo District Court of Moscow sentenced Alexei Navalny to nine years in prison in a maximum security colony “on charges of fraud on an especially large scale and contempt of court.”
On August 4, 2023, the Moscow City Court sentenced Alexei Navalny to another 19 years in prison in a special regime colony “on charges of creating an extremist community, financing extremist activities, calling for extremism on the Internet.”
