The Chantemesse street next to the Russian embassy in Paris will be named after Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in February, reports the independent Russian media Meduza.

The name of the street will be succinctly Lʼavenue Alexeï Navalny, i.e. Aleksei Navalny’s street. There will also be an artwork honoring Navalny’s memory near the street.

The decision to name the street was made by a French senator and former head of the 16th arrondissement Francis Szpinerin at the instigation of.

Navalny’s supporters have previously launched petitions proposing to name European streets in honor of the dead opposition leader. Petitions have been presented to rename streets in Berlin, The Hague and Vilnius, among others.

Navalnyi died on February 16 at the age of 47 while serving a 19-year prison sentence in Siberia.

Navalnyi’s death has been directly blamed on the Russian president Vladimir Putin. According to the US newspaper The Wall Street Journal, Putin did not necessarily give the order to kill.

Putin has also been reported to have held discussions about a prisoner exchange for Navalny just hours before his death.
