“Navalny should have been released in a few days, since we reached a decision on his exchange,” said Maria Pevchij, Navalny’s close collaborator, on Telegram.
According to Pevchij, the deceased Russian opponent was going to be exchanged along with “two American citizens” detained in Russia for a Russian imprisoned in Germany. “I received confirmation that negotiations were ongoing and in their final phase,” he said.
Pevchij did not identify the U.S. citizens who were allegedly part of the deal.
There are several detainees in Russia, including Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich arrested on espionage charges, and Paul Whelan, a corporate security executive from Michigan, convicted of espionage and serving a long prison sentence.
Both Americans and the United States Government deny the charges against them.
