The Russian political opponent, Alexei Navalny
– currently in prison – was found guilty in his retrial for fraud and insulting a judge, which could cost him a new prison sentence of up to a decade. Alexei Navalny has committed fraud, notably misappropriation of someone else’s assets through lies and breach of trust, said judge Margarita Kotova in her sentence. The sentence to which Navalny will be sentenced will be announced at a later date: the prosecution has asked for a 13-year prison sentence, while the defense has insisted on acquittal, stressing the absence of a crime in Navalny’s actions. The verdict was announced at an off-site court hearing in the N2 penal colony in the city of Pokrov, Vladimir region, where Navalny has been detained since last year.
