Navalny – Biden: Putin and his thugs responsible for his death – 2024-02-17 11:55:06

Joe Biden blames Vladimir Putin for the death of 47-year-old Alexei Navalny in prisons in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region.

As the American president clarified, he is not surprised but angered by the death of the leader of the Russian opposition. “We don’t know exactly what happened, but there is no doubt that Navalny’s death was a consequence of the actions of Vladimir Putin and his thugs,” Joe Biden said.

Top officials from the US and Europe have accused the Kremlin of causing Navalny’s death.

The international reactions

The President of the Commission spoke of a “grim reminder of what Putin and his regime are” Ursula von der Leyen referring to the death of Alexei Navalny.

“Deeply upset and saddened by the news of the death of Alexei Navalny. Putin fears nothing more than dissent from his own people. A grim reminder of what Putin and his regime are. Let us unite in our fight to protect the freedom and safety of those who dare to resist the autocracy” he pointed out in X.

“Deeply saddened and troubled. We must establish all the facts and Russia must answer all serious questions about the circumstances of his death,” NATO Secretary General said today Jens Stoltenberg.

The German chancellor Olaf Solz stated that the event is a horrible indication of how Russia as a country has changed in recent years.

“Alexei Navalny is dead because he was a symbol for a free and democratic Russia,” the German Foreign Minister wrote in X Analena Burbok. “Like no other, Alexei Navalny was a symbol for a free and democratic Russia. Precisely for this reason he had to die” he complains.

“Alexei Navalny fought for a democratic Russia. For this reason, Putin tortured him to death,” he wrote Christian Lindner.

The president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky pointed to Russian President Vladimir Putin as responsible for Navalny’s death and demanded that he be held accountable. “Obviously Navalny was murdered by Putin, like so many thousands of others. Putin doesn’t care who dies and tries to keep his position. He must be held accountable for his crimes,” Mr. Zelensky said at a joint press conference with Chancellor Olaf Solz in Berlin.

“His death in a Russian prison only highlights the weakness and rot at the heart of the system Putin has built. Russia is responsible for this,” said the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken.

Deeply shocked by the death of Alexei Navalny, the Spanish Foreign Minister said Jose Manuel Albarez and added that Madrid “demands that the circumstances” of his death be clarified. In his post on X, Albares underlined that this death “occurred during his unjust imprisonment for political reasons”, while he addressed his condolences to his “relatives” and “his support to those who work for freedom”.

The Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslav Sikorsky pointed to Vladimir Putin as responsible for Navalny’s death. “This man was guilty of defying Vladimir Putin (…) He was locked up in prison, where he lived in horrible conditions. Vladimir Putin is responsible for all this,” he told Polish news agency PAP.
