Naval engineer ‘sedated and tied to bed’, investigation extended

(ANSA) – NAPLES, 06 SEPTEMBER – The investigating judge of Santa Maria Capua Vetere (Caserta) Alessandra Grammatica has ordered additional investigations to shed light on the incident that a young engineer allegedly suffered while on duty aboard a merchant ship: the alleged victim, a twenty-year-old from Mondragone (Caserta), was picked up last March – in a state of confusion and with serious crushing trauma to his legs – by an air ambulance from the ship on which he worked and taken to Italy. According to the complaint subsequently filed by his family, the injuries ascertained by the health workers were the result of violence suffered while he was on duty on the ship: according to the story, the young man had suffered those injuries due to the restraint he suffered in the so-called “isolation cabin” of the ship, where he had been tied to the bed with cables used to transport cars, with the risk of losing the use of his limbs. The twenty-year-old was admitted to the vascular surgery department of the Cardarelli hospital in Naples and then discharged with “compartment syndrome in both lower limbs (Crusch Syndrome) with severe vascular-nervous impairment and containment injuries”. The prosecutor, after having investigated against unknown persons hypothesizing the crimes of kidnapping and aggravated injuries, has requested the archiving of the proceedings. The family, with the lawyer Sergio Pisani, has however presented an opposition accepted by the judge who has ordered another six months of investigative checks. The lawyer has also asked the court to appoint a consultant to ascertain whether the traumas suffered are attributable to the violation of the crimes of negligent personal injury and abuse of means of correction or discipline.
