Navajo Nation Reports 67 New COVID-19 Cases, One Death | News

WINDOW ROCK, Arizona, U.S. (AP) – A new coronavirus outbreak continues to advance in the Navajo Nation, whose authorities reported 67 new infections and one death on Friday.

Health officials in the semi-autonomous Indian territory – which includes parts of the states of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah – confirmed just a handful of infections, with no deaths, for eight consecutive days between August 1-8. But the Navajo Health Department issued an advisory to 19 communities Monday for the uncontrolled spread of the virus.

The Navajo Nation rebounded 39 positive for COVID-19 on Thursday from 49 the day before, when the virus claimed two more fatalities.

The latest figures bring the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic more than a year ago to 31,821, with 1,387 known deaths.

The Navajo Health Department issued three new public health emergency orders Thursday for businesses and schools as it reviews the maximum capacity for certain events.

The use of the mask is still mandatory in the territory, which is the largest reserve in the country at 70,000 square kilometers (27,000 square miles), but there is no curfew or confinement. Capacity is limited to 50% in restaurants (including indoor and outdoor dining rooms, self-service and terraces), tribal casinos, hotels, campsites and motorhome parks.
