Breaking! Developer Naughty Dog has halted development of The Last of Us’ multiplayer project, known internally as The Last of Us Online. The studio announced this via a blog post on its website own website.
The project was scrapped entirely for a pretty impactful reason. The developer explains that he was particularly proud of the entire concept. As a finished project, The Last of Us Online would provide an extremely cool experience for players. Although Naughty Dog should provide the game with a lot of features after launch post-launch content to continually expand and renew the experience.
According to Naughty Dog, the development of post-launch content be so extensive that the studio would have to put all its time and effort into it. And that for several years. As a result, Naughty Dog would hardly have time for other projects, such as the cinematic, immersive single-player games we have come to expect from the studio.
So there were two choices. Either Naughty Dog would transform into a live-service studio that would support The Last of Us Online for several years. Or the studio could stay true to its roots and continue to focus on impactful single-player games. Since narrative single-player titles are in Naughty Dog’s DNA, the studio opted for that.
Needless to say, Naughty Dog is devastated by the decision, as The Last of Us Online would be an ambitious project that would deliver a captivating experience. Such a game naturally needs a constant stream of updates, extras, expansions, events and more. Something Naughty Dog didn’t want to give up its single-player games for.
Why didn’t Sony allow the post-launch content of The Last of Us Online to be developed by another studio with Naughty Dog as a consultant? No idea. We’ll probably never know…
