Christian Neureuther loves the mountains, but is no longer chasing altitude records. Here the 74-year-old reveals how he stays fit in old age: “Nature and the mountains give me strength.”
Despite all the twists of fate, such as the death of his wife Rosi, Christian Neureuther always keeps moving. “That’s crucial in old age – but not only physically, but also mentally,” emphasizes the 74-year-old in an interview with the Munich Merkur/tz media group. “You should always face new challenges, try something – it doesn’t matter whether it’s a new hobby, helping your grandchildren with their schoolwork, or a trip. It’s just important to stay curious and get out of the old rut. It’s about awakening your own thirst for knowledge and quenching it again and again. Because new impressions and insights keep us mentally flexible.”
Age is not made for extremes
Christian Neureuther: When you are old you shouldn’t try to emulate the younger ones
When it comes to physical exercise, Neureuther advises enjoyment instead of excessive ambition. “You shouldn’t go to extremes and try to emulate the youngsters. Because old age is simply not made for extremes,” the Garmisch-Partenkirchner knows. So you don’t have to crown a nice hike with a record in altitude. “You can also take the mountain railway and move around without major inclines.”
Former ski star advises all seniors: Enjoy exercise in small bites

Neureuther recommends seniors who are no longer quite as fit to enjoy exercise in small bites. “Just go out and enjoy a walk in nature — not for too long, but more often. Get going, but don’t push yourself to the limit.” It is also effective to take advantage of small opportunities to exercise in everyday life – this can be taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or a bike ride to go shopping.
