Naturalized Indonesian National Team Players Share Challenges of Playing at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium

Jakarta – Two naturalized players in the Indonesian National Team, Thom Haye and Nathan Tjoe-A-On, talked about their experiences at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK). Both of them were there when the Garuda Squad played against the Vietnam National Team in the 2026 World Cup Qualification Asia Zone, March 21 2024.

Nathan Tjoe-A-On played from the first minute in the Indonesian National Team vs Vietnam National Team match. But in the second half, he was pulled out by coach Shin Tae-yong.

Nathan’s performance in his debut with the Indonesian National Team was nothing special. His role on the field in guarding the left area of the Garuda Squad’s defense does not appear prominent.

The SC Heerenveen player explained how difficult it is to play at SUGBK. He said the oxygen content was low and the field was in poor condition.

“The oxygen content is very low. You can barely get any air and the weather is hot,” said Nathan, quoted by Omrop Fryslan.

“The pitch is not good and you can hardly hear each other. It’s difficult to play,” added the 22-year-old player.

Thom Haye, who was in the stands at that time because his naturalization process was still ongoing, also agreed. Because at that time he was also having difficulty breathing.

The hot weather in Jakarta at that time meant that Thom Haye had to look for an air-conditioned room at SUGBK. Because in the stands it was difficult to get freshness considering the large number of supporters present.

“I had difficulty breathing in the stands. You get a lot of pressure from the heat. I wanted to stay in the stands as long as possible, but at some point we went into the air conditioning,” said Haye.
