NATO’s Open Door Policy and Ukraine’s Path to Membership: Conditions and Challenges

NATO continues to adhere to the policy of “open doors” and Ukraine will be invited to NATO when all the conditions are met, but now this is not possible, because it would mean drawing the US into a war with Russia.

Miller’s direct speech: “One of the things that Russia said before this war started was that they strongly opposed Ukraine joining NATO and wanted to get an ironclad commitment that Ukraine would never join NATO. We have made it clear that this is not being considered, that we We adhere to the NATO open door policy. We underline this commitment today. We have clearly stated that Ukraine will become a member of NATO.”

Details: According to him, it would be inappropriate to accept Ukraine into the alliance right now. A big reason why Ukraine isn’t joining NATO right now is that it would “instantly drag the United States into a war with Russia.”

The cancellation of the MAP, according to Matthew Miller, is a recognition of the progress that Ukraine has made over the past few years, especially since the full-scale Russian invasion: “Ukraine is becoming more and more integrated, in particular politically with NATO. You have seen how NATO is training Ukrainian forces, how NATO provides military systems,” he said.

Among the conditions for Ukraine’s accession to NATO, Miller noted the strengthening of democracy and anti-corruption reform. “Ukraine has already made significant progress, and we will be able to invite them to NATO when all the conditions are met,” he stressed. According to him, Ukraine has demonstrated progress in the reforms of democratization and the army.

“We have always understood why President Zelensky and other representatives of the Ukrainian government and society made requests to NATO, the United States and other countries. Their country was invaded, their infrastructure was attacked, thousands of their citizens died, we understand them. If we were on their place, we would have made the same requests,” the US State Department spokesman added.

What came before: The NATO summit in Vilnius on July 11 adopted a package of decisions of three elements on Ukraine, concerning, in particular, Ukraine’s path to membership.
