NATO assures Ukraine of support

NATO believes that the Russian offensive in the Donbass has stalled, but the war can continue for a long time. The Foreign Ministers of the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance discussed in Berlin how to help Ukraine.

NATO states will provide military assistance to Ukraine as long as it needs it for self-defense. This was announced by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock following an informal meeting of the foreign ministers of the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance in Berlin on Sunday, May 15, a DW correspondent reports.

According to Burbock, the ministers “analyzed in great detail and openly” the developments in Russia’s war against Ukraine, and also discussed what they could do “in the coming weeks and months” to help the people in Ukraine.

“We are unanimous that we have no right to weaken – and will not weaken – our national efforts – primarily in military support,” the German Foreign Minister stressed. “We are all aware that this war will not end so quickly,” she added.

NATO: Russia’s offensive in Donbas “stalled”

In turn, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg pointed out that Russia’s war against Ukraine is not going as planned in Moscow: “They failed to take Kyiv, they are retreating from the areas around Kharkov, their main offensive in the Donbass has stalled.”

According to Stoltenberg, Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to achieve his “strategic goals”: he failed to defeat Ukraine, NATO is “stronger than ever,” and Europe and North America are united.

“Ukraine can win this war. Ukrainians bravely defend their country,” the alliance’s secretary general added. He promised that NATO countries “will continue to strengthen military support for Ukraine.”

Burbock: Russia has destroyed the last platform for dialogue

Answering a question about the possibility of a dialogue with Russia, the German Foreign Minister stressed that “there should always be a dialogue.” “But we all found out in a hard way that the last form of dialogue that we had, namely the OSCE, was blown up by the Russian side,” Burbock said.

She recalled all attempts at negotiations, in particular in the Normandy format and in Minsk, as well as the efforts of the presidents of the United States, France, Turkey and the German chancellor to conduct a dialogue with Russia.

But Moscow rejected them, “and so we were left with no choice but to make it clear that we not only fully support Ukraine, because we have supported it before, but also provide military assistance to Ukraine so that it can defend itself,” Burbock added. .

She accused the Russian Federation of unilateral refusal to implement the Russia-NATO Founding Act.
