NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joana called on Ukraine to further implement internal reforms on the way to membership in the Alliance. About this he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday, August 26.
“I would say that when it comes to NATO, of course, we are more interested in the issues of reforming national security institutions, command and control, interoperability in the Armed Forces, civilian control, political control, parliamentary oversight, intelligence sector reform, which is very difficult. But there are also broader things when it comes to fighting corruption, reforming the judiciary, ensuring that the system operates within the framework of the rule of law, checks and balances – all of these issues are not necessarily related to the defense sector, but also with the values that we adhere to, “said Joana.
“This is why we urge Ukraine to continue to use the Annual National Program as much as possible. I know there will be a joint viewing of this program in December, and this is the best way to really see and tackle a number of issues,” added Joana.
According to him, there is a decision on Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO, and it was confirmed at the highest political level in the Alliance – in particular, at the summit in Brussels a few months ago.
“I urge our Ukrainian friends to stay on course and continue to prepare through internal reforms that are still needed to make further decisions,” the NATO deputy secretary general summed up.
Earlier, NATO announced the importance of the Black Sea for the Alliance… In the Black Sea, there is a large naval presence of forces of the Alliance and allies.
It was also reported that Ukraine joined NATO Security Center… The Ukrainian expert will work in the Alliance Energy Security Center operating in Lithuania.
