NATO will increase joint defense alliance spending next year.
This was reported by the Alliance press service, as European Pravda writes.
The military budget is expected to increase by 12% to 2.03 billion euros in 2024. The civic budget will increase by 18% to just over 438 million euros.
NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoane noted that increasing and expanding the use of NATO shared financing allows Alliance members to more effectively overcome common security challenges. “Co-financing demonstrates the solidarity and collective will of Alliance members. In turbulent times, we need this more than ever,” he said.
The NATO Civil Budget provides funds for personnel, operating and program costs for NATO Headquarters and its international personnel. The military budget covers the operating costs of NATO Command Structure headquarters, missions and operations around the world. The third major element of NATO co-financing is the NATO Security Investment Programme, which covers major civil works and investments in the command and control system. The program cap for 2024 is 1.3 billion euros, which is 30% more than in 2023.
“Co-financed budgets strengthen NATO by providing core capabilities, promoting deterrence, defense and interoperability, and supporting consultation and decision-making at the highest levels,” NATO said.
Let us recall that Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who is called the main contender for the post of new NATO Secretary General, faced resistance in Washington from congressmen who accused the Netherlands of insufficient defense spending under his rule.
