NATO will allocate 12 percent more to defense next year. The military budget will be increased to 2.03 billion euros. The civilian budget amounts to 438.1 million euros. This means an increase of 18.2 percent compared to this year.
NATO is increasing these budgets to more effectively address the shared security problems within the alliance, the international organization wrote in a statement on Wednesday.
“In turbulent times, we need this more than ever,” said Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana.
At a summit in Madrid in 2022, NATO cited Russia’s war against Ukraine as a reason to strengthen defenses. At a summit in Vilnius in 2023, the allies reaffirmed the importance of strengthening and unity.
The civilian budget is used for, among other things, personnel costs and the financing of certain programs. The military budget is specific to financing NATO missions and operations around the world.
