Russia has been highly critical of the West’s supply of arms to Ukraine and the expansion of NATO near its borders; Especially after NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced, yesterday, Thursday, the amount of military aid provided by the alliance, in preparation for the expected Ukrainian spring offensive.
Yesterday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that her country does not intend to follow the path of nuclear escalation in light of its crisis with the West over Ukraine, but she advised others not to test Moscow’s patience. “We will do everything we can to prevent events from developing according to the worst-case scenario, but not at the expense of infringement on our vital interests,” she said at a regular press conference. She added, “I do not recommend that anyone question our resolve and put it to the test.” Zakharova added, “The United States continues to deliberately infringe on our fundamental interests and intentionally create risks and increase the chances of confrontation with Russia.”
In turn, the Secretary-General of NATO said that the vehicles that were delivered to Kiev are intended to arm more than nine Ukrainian brigades, adding that this “puts Ukraine in a strong position to continue to restore control over the occupied territories.” Stoltenberg said that member states and partners have handed over to Ukraine 230 tanks, more than 1,550 armored vehicles, and “a wide range of ammunition” in recent months, in addition to hundreds of tanks and thousands of vehicles since the start of the war. “More than 98 percent of the vehicles pledged to Ukraine have already been delivered,” he said in Brussels. “We have trained and armed more than nine new Ukrainian armored brigades.” Stoltenberg concluded: “If we want a peaceful, negotiated solution that allows Ukraine to impose itself as a sovereign and independent country, the best way to achieve this is to provide military support to Ukraine, just as the (NATO) countries do.”
