“Security is not only a regional but also a global issue, so it is imperative that NATO and its partner countries act together against global challenges,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday in Vilnius after the two-day NATO summit.
The summit ended with a meeting of the heads of government of NATO member countries and Ukraine, before which the heads of state or government of the alliance member countries exchanged views with the leaders of Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia and the European Union.
At the final press conference, Stoltenberg said that one of the most important tasks facing the alliance is to help end the war in Ukraine. According to him, for this, Kyiv must receive the international support it needs for self-defense.
At the summit, the group of the most industrialized countries of the world (G7) signed a joint declaration on the possibility of providing long-term defense support to Ukraine within the framework of bilateral and multilateral agreements within the framework of the international framework plan. According to the statement, it is about both technical and material assistance, ranging from military equipment, training and cooperation in the field of intelligence and ending with protection against cyber attacks.
At the final press conference, the President of Poland Andrzej Duda said that in Vilnius “a number of” decisions were adopted that bring Ukraine closer to NATO.
Stoltenberg stressed that the summit confirmed that Ukraine would join NATO when the necessary conditions for this were met. He stressed that Wednesday’s meetings with NATO Partners for Co-operation were especially important, as they all have to face the most serious international challenges. He mentioned that China is involved in several areas.
Answering a question, Stoltenberg also said that the possibility of opening a NATO office in Tokyo is still being considered. However, the French President Emmanuel Macron stated that close cooperation with Japan is more important for the alliance than a physical presence there.
Stoltenberg said that an adequate level of defense spending is also one of the security guarantees. That is why all NATO member states must meet the minimum target of two percent of GDP for these spending, he stressed.
