NATO Summit and its Potential Impact on the Ukraine Crisis

NATO summit could further escalate Ukraine crisis

——Interview with German Bundestag Member Sevim Dadelen

German Bundestag member Sevim Dadelen said in a written interview with Xinhua News Agency recently that the United States and its NATO allies have launched a “proxy war” against Russia, and the upcoming NATO summit may further escalate the crisis in Ukraine. In addition, NATO’s attempt to intervene in the Asia-Pacific reflects the expansionary nature of this US-led military organization.

The NATO summit will be held in Vilnius, Lithuania, from 11 to 12 this month. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said a few days ago that the leaders of the member states will reiterate at the summit that Ukraine will join NATO in the future, agree on a multi-year aid plan for Ukraine, and formulate a new regional deterrence and defense plan.

Dadelen currently serves as the head of the Left Party Group of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag. She pointed out that the United States and its NATO allies have launched a “proxy war” against Russia by providing Ukraine with a large number of weapons and sending military advisers, hoping to defeat Russia through a combination of military force and comprehensive economic war.

Dadelen said that on the eve of the NATO summit, the relevant discussions among NATO member states are very worrying. There are serious discussions within NATO about giving Ukraine NATO membership or a NATO-style security guarantee, which could well trigger a war between NATO and Russia. “Fulfilling coalition obligations will escalate the ‘proxy war’ into a direct military confrontation with Moscow.”

NATO announced that the leaders of Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand will also be invited to the summit. Stoltenberg said the move was because NATO security “is not regional, it is global.”

In this regard, Dadelen said that NATO is a key tool for the United States to implement its security and military policies, and the United States enjoys absolute hegemony in NATO. NATO plans to set up a so-called liaison office in Japan, which once again reflects the ambition of NATO under the leadership of the United States to gain global hegemony.

Dadelen believes that NATO will strengthen its relationship with Asian allies such as Japan and South Korea in the process of moving eastward into the Asia-Pacific, so as to better safeguard its own interests. NATO is trying to bring regions such as the Pacific within its sphere of influence, “as part of NATO’s policy of deadly expansion.”
