Answering a question about a possible confrontation between Russia and NATO if Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance advances, Stoltenberg called it “a good thing” for the Alliance and for the United States to support Ukraine.
The Secretary General recalled that NATO was initially created to prevent wars.
“I am from Norway, we border with Russia. When Norway became a member of NATO, the Soviet Union called it a provocation. It was not a provocation, it is the right of every sovereign nation to choose its own path. Norway has this right, Sweden and Finland have it, and also in Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said.
He stressed that it is very important that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin does not achieve what he wants in Ukraine, because this will be an encouragement to other authoritarian regimes.
“Therefore, it is a good thing for us, for the United States, to support Ukraine, and also at a certain stage to invite them to become a full member of the Alliance,” said the NATO Secretary General.
Ukraine-NATO
Let us recall that at the beginning of January the first meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council took place in a military format at the level of military commanders-in-chief.
The format of the Ukraine-NATO Council was created by decision of the summit in Vilnius in the summer of 2023, as one of the steps towards our country’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance.
During the Council meetings, mutual consultations and decision-making took place.
