NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the Turkish Grand National Assembly’s vote to ratify Sweden’s membership of the North Atlantic Alliance.
His comment was quoted by the television company SVTreports “European Truth”.
Stoltenberg stressed that he now expects Hungary to complete the national ratification procedure as quickly as possible.”
“All NATO countries agreed in Vilnius to invite Sweden to our alliance, and Sweden has fulfilled its obligations. Swedish membership makes NATO stronger and makes us all safer,” he added.
As reported, the Turkish Parliament on the evening of January 23 after approved many hours of debate ratification of the protocol on Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.
Now, for the final ratification of the protocol on Sweden’s accession to the Alliance, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan must sign the parliament’s decision. This is a formal step, but it is unknown when exactly it will take place.
So far, besides Turkey, Sweden’s entry into NATO has not been approved by Hungary, which promised that it would “not be the last” in this process.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Tuesday invited his Swedish colleague to Budapest to discuss the application. But Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström, commenting on Orban’s invitation, said that There are no reasons for such negotiations yet.
