NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg Urges Support for Ukraine in Interview with ARD

The Ukrainian counter-offensive did not achieve its goals, and recent major Russian attacks put Ukraine in a critical position, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with ARD.

“I am always cautious about making predictions because wars are generally unpredictable. But it is clear that the more we support Ukraine, the faster this war will end,” he pointed out.

Stoltenberg explains:

It should be clear to us that it will be a complete tragedy for Ukraine if Putin wins the war. But that would be dangerous for us too. It is in our common interest to see to it that Ukraine prevails. Yes, there have been no major changes on the fronts in recent months, but we have to look at what the initial positions were. The Ukrainians managed to inflict serious damage on Russia with strikes deep in the rear, delivered by cruise missiles.

Airplanes and helicopters were destroyed there, they managed to repel the Russian military fleet in the eastern part of the Black Sea. This means that they are able to keep open the sea route through which grain from Ukraine is transported across the Black Sea. That is, we are talking about great victories, although they did not manage to shift the front lines.

We must also be prepared for bad news, but we have a duty to support Ukraine in both good and bad times. It is a war of attrition – a battle of efficiency, a battle of logistics. Increasing military output is critical.

We are working hard towards this goal. One of the serious problems is the fragmentation of the European arms industry. We are unable to cooperate as closely as would be necessary. The delivery of more military aid and ammunition is critical at this time. In this regard, we must see the big picture – that it is in the common interest of everyone in NATO to overcome some narrow-minded national interests – they are putting us in a dangerous situation, stressed the NATO Secretary General, quoted by DW.
