NATO Relies on Nuclear Weapons as Deterrent, Stoltenberg Emphasizes System’s Credibility

NATO has been using nuclear weapons for decades as a deterrent that works for the Western military alliance, Stoltenberg said.

“We must continue to ensure that it remains safe and reliable,” he stressed.

Stoltenberg stressed that NATO’s current system is based on “coordinated command procedures” involving US nuclear weapons and other NATO allies providing transport and logistics.

“Of course we have two other nuclear allies, the UK and France,” he added.

Stoltenberg pointed out that NATO has created such a system and the Allies should not do anything that would undermine the credibility of this arrangement.

The German government said on Wednesday it continued to rely on NATO’s ability to repel threats, citing the nuclear weapons of France and Britain as well as the United States, but signaled it was willing to explore other options.

“NATO exists, we believe in NATO and also in all support guarantees related to NATO,” said the government’s press representative Steffen Höbestreit.

“This does not free us from the task of constantly checking whether we are in the right position and what decisions we need to make in the future. And we will discuss these decisions and announce them when they are taken,” the official said.
