A NATO Liaison Office in Amman will be opened “soon” as stated by Mr. of the Atlantic Alliance, adding that it is one of NATO’s most important partners in the Middle East
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte referred today, Tuesday 3/12/2024 to the importance of Jordan as an important strategic partner, underlining the importance of King Abdullah’s participation in the NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting to promote the Jordanian-Alliance partnership.
During a press conference ahead of the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Rutte said: “Jordan is one of NATO’s most important partners in the Middle East. We will soon open the NATO Liaison Office in Amman. And this is an important step to make our deep relations in the region even stronger.”
NATO announced the establishment of a liaison office in Amman during the 2024 Summit in Washington in July as part of a “action plan to strengthen cooperation in the MENA region in response to evolving security and regional dynamics”.
The Alliance said at the time that the action plan sought a “stronger, more strategic and results-oriented approach to its southern neighbourhood”.
“The plan clearly demonstrates NATO’s commitment to strengthening engagement and cooperation with its partners in the Middle East and North Africa, including through the establishment of the liaison office in Amman,” the Allies said in a statement at the time.
NATO said the decision to open an office in Amman “marks an important milestone in the deep strategic partnership between Jordan and the Alliance. It recognizes Jordan’s important role as a beacon of stability both regionally and globally and as a long-standing champion in the fight against transnational threats, including terrorism and violent extremism.”
“The Office, acting as a representative office, will bring NATO and Jordan closer together, enhancing political dialogue and practical cooperation in areas of common interest between the Alliance and Jordan. It will enable regular cooperation between NATO and the Jordanian authorities, thus contributing to a better shared understanding of the national and regional context.”
