ROMA – Pope Francis said NATO’s eastward expansion may have provoked Russian President Vladimir Putin to launch an attack on Ukraine.

In an interview published Tuesday by the Italian daily Corriere Della Sera, the Pope speculated “NATO barks at Russia’s door” could prompt the Kremlin to launch a military campaign on February 24.

“I can’t say whether it was provoked, but maybe yes,” the Pope said.
