NATO terms
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Tuesday that NATO leaders had agreed during their summit in Lithuania to invite Ukraine to join the bloc when “the conditions are met.”
“We also made it clear that we will invite Ukraine to join NATO, when the allies agree and the conditions are met,” Stoltenberg told reporters after the talks.
He added, “It is the first time that we use the word invitation,” in response to a question about the discontent expressed hours ago by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky because of the NATO’s position.
“It seems that there is no intention to give Ukraine an invitation to NATO, nor to make it a member of the alliance,” Zelensky wrote on Twitter.
The Ukrainian president stressed that “hesitation is weakness,” considering that “not setting any timetable for the invitation or for Ukraine’s accession to the alliance is unprecedented and absurd.”
