“We have a good dialogue with Finland’s political leaders (..) and with Sweden. Of course, they have to decide, but if they apply, they will be approved by all 30 NATO allies. We will find ways to do that quickly,” Stoltenberg told CNN.
Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marina announced on Saturday that Finland’s decision on NATO membership should be made this spring, when the government and parliament have carefully considered all possible pros and cons.
Against the background of the Ukrainian war, public support for NATO membership has increased in Finland. A recent opinion poll shows that 62% of Finnish citizens would currently support joining the Alliance.
Finland has a border with Russia of 1,340 kilometers, the longest of all European Union Member States.
On March 28, Finnish President Sauli Nīniste discussed with NATO Secretary General “principles and procedures” for admitting new members to the Alliance.
The Swedish Prime Minister, Magdalen Andesson, who declared NATO membership unacceptable in early March, now claims that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has fundamentally changed the situation in Europe, making NATO membership quite acceptable to Sweden.
