NATO fighter jets have intercepted more than 300 Russian warplanes over Europe this year, the alliance announced. The cases were related to the approach of Russian planes to the pact’s airspace, mainly over the Baltic Sea, BTA reports.
It is specified that NATO air patrols are activated upon the approach of foreign aircraft whose flights are missing data. It is common on the alliance’s eastern flank for Russian warplanes to fly with their position, altitude and flight plan data transmitters turned off and not to contact air traffic control, the statement added.
It is noted that in most cases of interception, the Russian military acted professionally. It added that NATO airspace was rarely violated, and when it was, it was for a short time.
NATO adds that since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the defensive presence of the allies on the eastern flank has been increased. The alliance noted the deployment of allied fighter jets to Romania, as well as additional forces in the Baltic Sea, where a pipeline was again disrupted in October.
