NATO does not understand what Putin wants to achieve; is expected to attack not only Ukraine, the newspaper reports

The situation is aggravated by the lack of unity in NATO, as the Alliance has no understanding of what to do if Russia attacks the Baltic states, let alone Ukraine.

On 12 January, for the first time in more than two years, the Russian Council was a member of NATO. Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the Russian delegation.

Earlier, NATO foreign ministers discussed in a video conference, but on January 10, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov met with his American counterpart Wendy Sherman.

The goal (from a Western perspective) was one – to prevent a Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, after these talks, the foreboding of the invasion in the West became even gloomier. “There is a real risk of a new war conflict in Europe,” Stoltenberg said after the meeting.

Russian authorities accuse the West of military domination.
In addition, the Kremlin wants NATO not to accept former Soviet republics, such as Ukraine. In addition, the Alliance must withdraw troops from Eastern European countries.

It is practically impossible to meet these requirements. Each nation can determine its own destiny, Stoltenberg said. This is the “fundamental principle” on which European security is based.

This means that preparations for war in Eastern Europe are continuing.

More and more Russian soldiers are going to the Ukrainian border. Their number has already reached a hundred thousand, they are armed with tanks, drones, artillery, writes “Der Spiegel”.

From NATO’s point of view, a blow could soon follow, although not all troops have been deployed yet. Moreover, Brussels no longer rules out that Putin may seek armed confrontation with the West and outside Ukraine.

NATO sources report a scenario within the alliance that Russia could use its high military presence in the Mediterranean, the North Atlantic and the Arctic to attack on a broad front, including NATO members, according to press reports. In this case, we have to wait for a massive campaign of disinformation and cyber attacks.

In addition, although NATO does not provide concrete evidence to prepare for such attacks, they believe they are entirely real. In this case, the Alliance will not be able to quickly resist the attack – neither on the battlefields nor in cyberspace.

NATO has been searching for weeks for exactly what the Russian president wants to do by moving troops to Ukraine’s border. Because his main demand has actually been met: the promised membership of Ukraine and Georgia in 2008 will not be discussed in practice, as territorial conflicts continue in both countries.

The Kremlin leader has achieved another goal: US President Joe Biden is in direct talks with the Kremlin. Russia has returned to the world stage as a great power, but Europeans have simply turned into statistics, according to Der Spiegel.

Putin’s provocations brutally exposed Western weaknesses. The question arises as to how far the United States and Europeans are prepared to defend countries such as Estonia or Lithuania, not to mention Ukraine and other non-NATO countries, Der Spiegel said.

It is unclear whether Europeans will be able to push for tougher economic sanctions against Russia in the event of an attack on Ukraine, as this will lead to an even sharper rise in fuel prices in Europe.

In the event of war, only the Nord Stream – 2 gas pipeline has been decided, according to Der Spiegel. The United States “has difficulty imagining the gas flowing through the pipeline (if war breaks out,” Wendy Sherman said after talks in Brussels.
