NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joane believes that the Alliance must prepare for a long war between Russia and Ukraine, since neither side yet has the military ability to win a “decisive victory.”
He said this in an interview with a Romanian TV channel Digi24reports “European Truth”.
According to Joane, Russia’s military economy “corresponds to today’s needs,” and, moreover, “in a way that completely goes beyond the limits of international law,” North Korea and Iran either promise or are already sending Russia weapons for the war against the Ukrainians.
“Just as some of us, perhaps at the beginning of the war, almost three years ago, thought that in two weeks the Russians would occupy Kiev, we said: “No, Ukraine has the ability to resist,” so, perhaps, we had too much. There was a lot of enthusiasm, optimism at the beginning of the Ukrainian offensive a few months ago last spring,” added the Deputy Secretary General of the Alliance.
At the same time, he urged not to resort to exaggerated pessimism, “because Ukraine has enough resources to support this war and be successful.”
“My call is to prepare for a long war, that it will continue. This (end of the war. – Ed.) will not happen in 2024 and probably not in 2025. We do not see the military potential that would make it possible to win a decisive victory “, on the one hand. We expect a protracted war with small offensives, counter-offensives, with the conquest and loss of territory,” says Joane.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg previously saidthat the Russian Federation will not be able to achieve its goals in Ukraine, despite its great efforts, and that “Putin has lost Ukraine forever.”
