NATO Denies Plans to Send Troops to Ukraine as Russia Warns of Conflict
In a recent development, NATO’s secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, has denied any plans to send troops to Ukraine. This statement comes in response to remarks made by French President Emmanuel Macron, who suggested that Western states could potentially send ground troops to Ukraine. Stoltenberg’s denial contradicts Russia’s claim that it is ready to enter a direct conflict with NATO if boots are put on the ground in Ukraine.
Stoltenberg emphasized that there are “no plans for NATO combat troops on the ground in Ukraine.” While ruling out military action, he reiterated NATO’s commitment to supporting Ukraine strongly. He condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, stating that it blatantly violates international law. Stoltenberg stressed that Ukraine has the right to self-defense, and NATO has the right to support them in upholding that right.
Macron’s comments were made during a meeting of European leaders in Paris, where he sought to position himself as a champion of Ukraine’s cause. With US support waning, Macron’s remarks aimed to demonstrate European solidarity with Ukraine. However, he did not provide details on which nations were considering sending troops, citing “strategic ambiguity.” Macron stated that while there is no consensus today for an official deployment of troops, nothing can be ruled out in terms of dynamics.
The prospect of Western states sending ground troops to Ukraine was welcomed by Ukrainian officials. Mykhailo Podolyak, a presidential adviser, expressed gratitude for the awareness of the risks posed by Russia and its militaristic aggression. However, other nations moved swiftly to de-escalate the situation. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, both strong supporters of Ukraine, stated that they were not considering sending troops. Sweden, which is set to join NATO, also clarified that it does not envision sending ground troops to Ukraine.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of Sweden emphasized that sending troops is not currently on the cards. This statement comes after Sweden cleared the final obstacle to joining NATO, solidifying its commitment to the transatlantic military alliance. Similarly, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that his government has no plans to propose sending Slovak soldiers. However, he acknowledged that some countries are considering bilateral deals to assist Ukraine in fending off the Russian invasion.
The situation in Ukraine remains tense as Russia continues its aggression. While NATO denies plans for troop deployment, the possibility of Western states providing further support to Ukraine cannot be ruled out.
