NATO: “Dangerous and irresponsible” Russia’s stance on nuclear weapons in Belarus

NATO described Russia’s stance as “dangerous and irresponsible” a day after Vladimir Putin announced the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, while Ukraine called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and asked the West and China to put an end to the “nuclear hostage” practiced by Russia.

“NATO is on high alert and we are closely monitoring the situation. We have not seen any changes in the layout of Russia’s nuclear arsenal that would lead us to change ours,” said a spokesman for the Atlantic alliance.

Russia’s reference to NATO nuclear sharing is completely misleading. NATO allies act in full respect of their international commitments. “Russia has systematically violated its own commitments under the arms control process, most recently by suspending its participation in the New START Treaty,” the spokesman said.

In Kiev, Ukraine’s foreign ministry said in a statement: “Ukraine expects effective actions from the United Kingdom, China, the United States and France to counter the Kremlin’s nuclear blackmail. We request an emergency convening of the United Nations Security Council for this purpose.”
