According to the retired colonel of the Defense Forces, Hannes Toomsalu, the situation in the world forces NATO countries to take care of increasing ammunition stocks, Estonian public television program “Actual Camera” reported on Saturday.
“The global arms industry is not ready for this. Factories are standing, they must be started. France announced a few days ago the launch of one such factory. But the European Union’s big promise to send a million shells to Ukraine was never fulfilled, 260 thousand were sent. European ammunition depots are almost empty. I don’t really understand what everyone is waiting for,” said Toomsalu.
The Ministry of Defense of Estonia has announced a plan to create a defense industrial park for the production of ammunition. Sites where it could be built are currently being considered. Areas located in the municipalities of Lääne-Harju, Rakvere, Viru-Nigula, Liuganuse and Pärnu have been selected as potential locations.
The Ministry of Defense has selected five potential sites for the construction of a defense industrial park.
“The government has decided to create a defense industrial park. We see that it will be needed mainly for the production of ammunition. The park also includes the hazardous areas required for the handling of explosives and explosive materials. If everything goes well, within two to two and a half years we will be able to prepare the park and start operations there,” said Indrek Sirps, adviser to the Ministry of Defense on defense industry issues.
