NATO air forces continue to conduct reconnaissance missions in Europe. Recently, the RQ-4D Phoenix strategic drone made its first flight along the Finnish-Russian border.
What is known
NATO has stepped up reconnaissance flights of unmanned and manned aircraft amid Russia’s war against Ukraine. Since 2022, NATO drones have carried out many missions on the eastern flank. The main priority was the Black Sea region.
The RQ-4D Phoenix strategic drone, also known as Global Hawk Block 40, recently completed its first flight over the territory of Finland, which has been a NATO member for almost six months. The drone collected intelligence data that will be transmitted to all Alliance allies.
The RQ-4D can fly at an altitude of more than 22 km. The drone weighs almost 7000 kg, and the maximum payload weight is 1360 kg. Taking into account the fuel, which is enough for 33 hours of flight, the take-off weight exceeds 14,000 kg.
