The Russian invasion of Ukraine has had a major impact on the security situation across Europe. This war also forces the European Union and NATO to cooperate more closely. Thus, the third declaration of cooperation between the two organizations was made.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said closer NATO-EU relations could be helpful not only in the Ukrainian issue.
“The threats and challenges posed by Russia are the most urgent, but not the only ones. We also see China’s growing attempts to change the world order in its favor.
Therefore, we must strengthen our resistance. With this joint statement, we are taking our cooperation to a new level.”
Initially, the declaration was to be signed at the NATO leaders’ summit in Madrid in the summer. But the war in Ukraine, as well as the strained relations between Cyprus and Turkey, forced to change the text and the date.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the statement also emphasizes that European defense policy does not overshadow NATO.
“Our statement clearly states that NATO remains the foundation of our collective defense and continues to play an essential role in Euro-Atlantic security.
It also recognizes the importance of a stronger European defence, which contributes positively to our security and is complementary to and mutually compatible with NATO.”
NATO is currently made up of 21 European Union countries. Finland and Sweden are also expected to join the alliance soon.
