Events unfolded rapidly right from the start: Joselu put the guests from Spain in the lead in the 4th minute. Becir Omeragic scored what appeared to be the equalizer (7th minute), but the goal was disallowed due to a handball by Remo Freuler.
In the 13th minute, Fábian Ruiz increased the lead to 2-0, but the first setback for the Spaniards followed: defender Robin Le Normand was sent off with a straight red card after an emergency braking (21st).

The sending off was reviewed by the VAR for several minutes due to a possible offside position, but the referee team stuck to the original decision.
Just before the half-time whistle, Zeki Amdouni scored the 1:2 goal for the Nati (41st minute). After a corner, Breel Embolo headed the ball and Amdouni only had to push it into the empty goal. In the second half, Ruiz (77th minute) and Ferran Torres (80th minute) again made things clear, even when they were outnumbered.
Both teams failed to score on the first matchday: the national team suffered a bitter 0-2 defeat against Denmark, while the Iberians could only manage a 0-0 draw against Serbia.

Spain’s record, however, is impressive: the European champions have suffered only one defeat in their last 20 international matches (0-1 in a friendly against Colombia in March 2024). Recently against Serbia, “La Furia Roja” failed to score for the first time in ten matches.
In direct comparison with the Spaniards, Switzerland has only won one of the last five duels – but this was the last game against Spain to date: In the 2022/23 Nations League season, the Nati won 2-1 away in Zaragoza, Spain. Now the next coup is to be achieved in the stadium in Geneva.
