National Workers: The high cost of living and rising prices threaten peace

Al-Akhbar (Nouakchott) – “The high cost of living and the insane rise in prices threaten peace and stability at the global and national levels,” said the National Confederation of Mauritanian Workers (CNTM).

In the speech of its Secretary General, Mohammed al-Rabbani, on the occasion of the International Labor Day, the Confederation enumerated what it considered a set of challenges that working women suffer from globally and nationally.

CNTM mentioned among the challenges of the working people “the worsening of poverty, rising prices, the growth of Western domination, and the exacerbation of the Russian-Ukrainian, Sudanese and Tunisian crises…

The Confederation said that the Mauritanian working people suffer in particular from several challenges on the economic, social and political levels.

And the Confederation pointed out that “despite these challenges,” the Mauritanian worker has achieved during the past year gains that it described as important, including a review of the Labor Code and an increase in the minimum wage by 50%.

In a petition addressed by the Confederation to the Mauritanian Ministry of Civil Service and Labor and the Federation of Employers, CNTM called for an increase in the minimum wage and an increase in salaries.

The syndicate also demanded a review of the texts of the National Social Security Fund and the National Health Insurance Fund system.

In its 2023 petition, the Confederation demanded a review of the Labor Code, the Civil Service Law, and collective and sectoral agreements.

The presentation of the Confederation’s demands and its diagnosis of the labor reality in Mauritania came on the sidelines of a commemorative march for the 1st of May this year. Participants carried banners calling for an increase in salaries, a solution to workers’ problems related to contracts, the launch of collective negotiations, and the organization of the trade union field.
