National Winning Team Requests KPU Firmness in Response to Controversial Exit from Podium at Vice Presidential Debate

The National Winning Team (TPN) Ganjar-Mahfud asked KPU be firm about candidates who move from the podium and approach the podium of internal opponents vice presidential debate 2024 presidential election.

Head of the TPN Scheduling Team, Aria Bima, questioned whether shifting from the debate podium was legally permissible or not. According to him, according to the regulations, this is not allowed.

“Yes, yesterday it appeared that it was advancing to Mr. Mahfud’s place. Mas Gibran was advancing to Mr. Mahfud’s place, is that allowed or not? The rules are not allowed,” he said at the TPN Media Center, Central Jakarta, Saturday (23/12).

Aria said that according to the debate rules each candidate pair should be static, not move from behind the podium. He also asked the KPU to reprimand Gibran for his actions.

“So I asked the KPU for firmness, yesterday there had to be a warning, because it was from LO [Liaison officer] “What was conveyed to us was that there is no such thing as intervention to the right and left, or progress,” he said.

He stated that in last night’s debate, Mahfud strictly followed these rules. He did not move to the right, left, or to the front of the podium.

Aria said that at the third debate event, TPN would ask for firmness from the organizers regarding these rules.

At the first vice presidential debate yesterday, Gibran always moved from the podium and moved closer to Cak Imin and Mahfud’s podium every time he answered their questions.

As soon as he finished delivering his response, Gibran stood up straight again at the podium.

Apart from that, in the closing segment, Gibran even approached the podium of the two other candidate pairs. On that occasion, Gibran greeted Cak Imin and Mahfud.

“I am very happy to be able to share the stage with great people like this. It’s really nice for young people to be able to exchange ideas with the general chairman of a political party and a professor,” said Gibran after shaking hands with Cak Imin and Mahfud.

The act of leaving the podium was also carried out by vice presidential candidate number 1, Muhaimin Iskandar. He did that when responding to one of the questions asked by Gibran.

“I just found out that I can be here as well, so that I can be closer to the panelists,” said Cak Imin.

When confirmed regarding this matter, KPU Commissioner Idham Holik stated that he was not handling the debate. CNN Indonesia still trying to confirm the other KPU commissioners.

The KPU has finished holding the second debate for the 2024 presidential election yesterday, Friday (22/12). The debate was held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) at 19.00 WIB involving the vice presidential candidates.

The three vice presidential candidates who competed in ideas included Muhaimin Iskandar, Gibran Rakabuming and Mahfud MD.

The theme of the vice presidential debate on December 22 2023 is the people’s economy, digital economy, finance, investment, taxes, trade, APBN/APBD management, infrastructure and urban areas.
