National Vaccination Schedule: Free and Mandatory Vaccine for Pregnant Women to Protect Newborns from Bronchiolitis

As part of the National Vaccination Schedule, a dose will be given to pregnant women between weeks 32 and 36 of gestation with the aim of protecting newborns against bronchiolitis during the first six months of life. Primary Health Care centers are available to answer any type of query in this regard.

The Health Secretariat of the Municipality of Necochea reports that the vaccination strategy against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is now available in the district, indicated for pregnant people between weeks 32 and 36 with the aim of providing, through the transplacental antibody, protection against bronchiolitis in newborns during the first six months of life, which is the time of greatest vulnerability to suffer from this type of severe conditions.

The inoculation is free and mandatory, since it was incorporated into the National Vaccination Calendar (CNV) on January 1, 2024, so those who must apply it must go to the Primary Health Care Center closest to their home to obtain more information.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus is the main cause of acute lower respiratory infections in childhood and particularly in infants under one year of age. It also causes an increase in hospitalizations, with eventual complications with critical care requirements and a high level of outpatient consultations in the winter season.

The Ministry of Health of the Nation anticipates that the incorporation of the vaccine will contribute to the decrease in neonatal and post-neonatal infant mortality in our country, by reducing infection by this virus in girls and boys under six months of age.

About the vaccine

The RSV vaccine was authorized by the National Administration of Medicines, Foods and Medical Technology (ANMAT) for use in people who are between 32 and 36 weeks of gestation. It has quality, efficacy and safety attributes, and protects against RSV-A and RSV-B variants. Studies indicate that efficacy against severe disease is 81.8% in the first 90 days of life.

During the last month, the technical guidelines for vaccination against RSV were disseminated, along with a quick guide for health personnel at vaccination centers throughout the country, with training available online that allows the country’s health personnel to have access to the best quality of information about the new strategy.

It is important to highlight that this strategy is added to the other vaccines indicated for the protection of pregnant people, such as the flu vaccine and the Covid-19 vaccine, which are applied in any trimester of pregnancy. In addition, the acellular triple bacterial vaccine is applied from 20 weeks of gestation and protects the newborn against whooping cough during the first months of life.
