National union movement calls for transparency in the SNTE

The National Movement for Trade Union Transformation (MNTS) called for the democratization of union organizations in the country, especially with regard to the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), which has remained for many years in conditions of “lack of transparency.”

By holding the meeting of its national political coordination this Saturday – in which delegates from 23 states of the Republic participated – the MNTS analyzed the country’s challenges in terms of education, work and union life.

In this framework, he called for reflection on the process of union democratization in Mexico and stressed that “it is time to confront decades of lack of transparency and autonomy in the SNTE.”

The members of the organization stated that the current interim leader of the SNTE, Alfonso Zepeda, “has illegally extended his stay in office, after having concluded his term in February of this year.”

Due to the above, they urged that the next sectional processes of that union, such as those of Sonora (Section 28), Colima (Section 6), State of Mexico (Section 17) and San Luis Potosí (Section 26), scheduled before ending the year, are carried out under conditions of equity and transparency, “avoiding falling into the vices of the past.”

In the past sectional congresses, they warned, there were “multiple protests from various teaching expressions throughout the country due to inequality within the SNTE”, due to the fact that the leaders of that union formation “are judge and party.”

The national coordinator of the MNTS, Ricardo Aguilar, asked the labor authorities, the Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Labor Court “to guarantee transparent and equitable union processes, in accordance with the reforms implemented in recent years by the legislative bodies,” and stated their confidence in President Claudia Sheinbaum to carry out this process of union democratization.

THE MNTS stressed the importance of the SNTE, “as one of the largest unions in Mexico and America, to resume its role in the defense of education and labor rights, moving away from merely political interests.”

Likewise, he reaffirmed his commitment to “contribute to the creation of a united and responsible union that responds to the true concerns of the national teachers, that works hand in hand with the new government to promote the transformation that Mexico needs.”
