National Television of Chile: 50 Years After the Coup d’état – A Commitment to Democracy and Human Rights

In commemoration of the 50 years of the Coup d’étatat the beginning of the news 24 Centraltransmitted by Chilean National Television y 24 Hour Channelbegan with an editorial about what happened on the public channel after the bombing of The coin.

This was the editorial:

50 years ago, after the bombing of La Moneda, this news program was not aired and National Television of Chile did not begin its broadcasts for several days. Augusto Olivares was then the Director of TVN, and also personal advisor to President Salvador Allende, with whom he died in La Moneda on September 11, 1973.

Public television was attacked and intervened after the Coup d’état. Armed soldiers took the channel by force and ordered the burning and destruction of valuable audiovisual material that is part of the history of our country, such as Pablo Neruda’s Nobel Prize. Some managed to be hidden and saved by the brave action, for example, of who is today the head of documentation at TVN, Amira Arratiaand this audiovisual heritage today allows the country to preserve invaluable images of episodes that the dictatorship wanted to eliminate.

With terror as a vehicle, censorship and montages became sadly frequent in TVN’s content, that with the return to democracy and on various occasions, it has taken charge of the pain that these lies generated in the victims of the dictatorship, assuming its institutional responsibility, for example, exhibiting how the montages were created and the truth that was hidden behind they.

Hoy, 50 years after the Coup d’état that fractured the country, The Press Department of National Television of Chile, ratifies its commitment to democracy and reaffirms its defense of Human Rightsfreedom of expression and the exercise of journalism.

The professionals who are part of this team today hope that Chile’s public television will never be taken by force again., intervened, censored, nor used to silence, ignore, or harm any person for the simple fact of thinking differently. National Television of Chile is, and should always be, a place for all the inhabitants of the country.
