National School Breakfast wants to offer breakfast to primary school children all year round | NOW

The National School Breakfast wants to offer breakfast to primary school children who need it all year round. The organization reports it on the first day of its event, attended by 400,000 children from around 2,000 schools this week.

Due to the growing poverty in the Netherlands, the organization wants to help children in a more structural way.

By the end of this month, primary schools should be able to sign up for breakfast packages via a platform. This is also how schools can participate in the annual event. The National School Breakfast now wants to make this system structurally available.

Food companies participating in the National School Breakfast provide breakfast items. However, no subsidy has yet been found for the other costs. These are, for example, the packaging of breakfasts and logistics costs.

The National School Breakfast is asking for help from companies, but it is also asking for help from the government. It is not yet possible to say exactly how much money is needed, according to Sandra Pluim of the organization. This also depends on the companies that may still report.

According to Pluim, his organization receives more and more talk about children going to school without breakfast due to poverty. “Children fall asleep in class and cannot concentrate well. Poverty brings shame, which makes some obstacles to collecting food from the food bank feel.”

The National School Breakfast initiative ensures that all children can start the school day after a healthy breakfast.
