National Public Transport Strike in Italy: Potential Chaos on January 24th

Twenty-four hours of possible chaos. Next Wednesday, January 24, is the day chosen by grassroots unions for a nationwide local public transport strike that risks bringing transport to its knees in Milan and the rest of Italy.

In the Milanese capital, subways, buses and trams will be able to stop, with the employees of the Foro Bonaparte company being able to cross their arms all day. It was ATM itself that provided the times of the strike, called by Usb private work and Al Cobas.

“In Milan, the strike could have consequences on our lines from 8.45am to 3pm and after 6pm, until the end of the service”, reads the note from the Milanese company. Therefore in the city the metro and surface transport are guaranteed from the start of service until 8.45am and between 3pm and 6pm, in the two guarantee periods. For the rest of the day, however, there may be blockages and disruptions.

Trains are also at risk

Chapter trains. “From 00:00 to 23:59 on Wednesday 24 January, a strike is planned, proclaimed by Usb private work, in which only the staff of the infrastructure manager Ferrovienord could join”, Trenord said, announcing that “the strike could have repercussions” also on regional convoys.

“Trains running on the lines “Milano Cadorna – Canzo/Asso, Como Lago/Novara Nord/Laveno/Varese; S3 Milano Cadorna – Saronno; S4 Milano Cadorna – Camnago L.; Brescia/Iseo – Edolo;”, as well as “the Malpensa Express and S50 Malpensa Airport – Bellinzona airport connections”.

The Passante S1, S2, S9, S12, S13 lines are also at risk of “repercussions”. “The trains circulating exclusively on the FerrovieNord lines, with departure scheduled from the station of origin by 9:00 am, will arrive at the final destination; in the afternoon, however, with departure scheduled from the station of origin by 9:00 pm”, he underlined the company from Piazzale Cadorna.

The reasons for the strike

For Usb Lavoro Privato the strike was proclaimed “for the free exercise of the right to strike; for exceeding entry wages; against contracts and subcontracts; for workplace and service safety; for the minimum wage; for a law on representation; for the freeze on military spending”. The same union also protests “for the failure to convene it to the negotiations for the renewal of the national collective agreement for the sector”.

For Al Cobas the agitation was proclaimed “against any form of limitation of the right to strike and abolition of agreements on representation, overcoming monopoly built on the complicity of trade union organizations and employers’ associations; for exceeding the minimum entry salary, 1,600 euros net per month; against contracts and subcontracts; for an investment and hiring plan in all public utility sectors; for safety and health protection in all work environments; for the freeze on military spending; against large speculative works”.
