A national peace rally is taking place in Bern today, a good year after the Russian army invaded Ukraine. It demands continued support for Ukraine and calls for action to restore peace.
The rally is organized by a broad, non-partisan alliance of parties, trade unions and aid organizations together with the Ukrainian association in Switzerland. Under the motto “Stand With Ukraine”, the alliance is making three demands: support for the people in Ukraine, effective implementation of the sanctions and an active peace policy by Switzerland.
The demonstration is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at Berner Schützenmatte. A move to the Bundesplatz is then planned. FDP, GLP, Greens and SP politicians will give speeches there, as the announcement said.
The Movement for Socialism (BFS) will also take part in the rally. This accuses Switzerland of making itself an “accomplice in the Russian war of aggression”. According to a statement by the BFS, only a fraction of the Russian oligarchs’ funds are blocked in Swiss banks. The movement announced that it distances itself from bourgeois people who support the peace demonstration.
