At 7 a.m. this morning, the first enthusiast was already in line for the Decoratelier in Zuidoost. National Opera & Ballet is selling exclusive costumes and clothing today and tomorrow. More than 10,000 costumes from 60 operas and one ballet production are available for purchase. Princess dresses, bear suits and deer antlers: there was something for everyone. “We buy here for carnival,” said one of the visitors.

Visitors can browse among the 10,000 costumes worn during different productions. “It’s gigantic. 5,000 people will come in two days and we have 10,000 costumes, so people will go out with arms full,” says general director of National Opera & Ballet Stijn Schoonderwoerd.
At 9 a.m. the doors opened and hundreds of people rushed in with large suitcases and bags. “This is really becoming a battlefield. My tactic is to beat around the bush,” said a buyer to AT5.
A second life
With this sale, National Opera & Ballet wants to ensure that the costumes get a second life. The proceeds will go towards the implementation of a barcode program that will allow National Opera & Ballet to digitize its entire storage of costumes and make-up. Visitors who have booked a time slot later in the day do not have to worry that all their clothing is already gone. “A very good distribution has been ensured, so people can expect plenty of costumes,” Huisman told AT5.

Showpiece
The sale attracted a lot of attention. “There are only enthusiasts, from professionals in the styling field to people who love costumes,” said Nicole Huisman, ambassador of the event. The showpiece of the sale is a huge princess dress by Marie from ‘Il Barbiere’ that costs 1250 euros.
